It is now coming to a year since footballer Ausi Kaaya was diagnosed with acute tuberculosis and hospitalized at Nsambya Hospital. The former Uganda Cranes Defender has since undergone through two lung operations but has not fully recovered. Another operation needs to be lined up in the shortest time possible to ensure his safety. A fundraising drive has now been organized by a group of sportsmen. The drive will climax with a breakfast on 3rd March at Barbados Hotel in Kampala. “The D-day is going to be 3rd March and we are giving people time.” “Whenever one of our own has a problem, we should always come up enormous and help our brothers.”
The sportsmen who intend to raise more than 17 million shillings believe more should have been done by the Federation of Uganda Football Association and the Football Players Associations. "What could be done is that within the federation there could be a welfare which could be in-charge of players who have issues. Now, some money could be contributed or collected for example there's a game; there could be a percentage that is put there to help the very players." Said, Ausi Kaaya – Kaaya’s Friend. “He was active as a player in the Players Association and was still playing football. Now, this is the time where the Players Association should come out to help one of its own who is Ausi Kaaya who has a problem.” Said, Hassan Waswa – Ex- Player.
On top of playing for State House FC, Police, KCCA and Proline FC, Kaaya was also a member of the Uganda Cranes team that won the 2003 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Sudan.
