The young men you see here barely knew the basics of this sport two weeks ago when this fencing course began. To most like Timothy Mubarak from Bundibugyo, this sport was played on principles earlier given to them but not anymore. After two weeks of Italian trainer Alexandro, the boys can now play with mastering the foreign style of the sport as Mubarak attested. “In fencing, we start with saluting, then after saluting you go on guard, then on guard, you start and be on guard. There, you either attack or you defend yourself.”
Fencing master Caroline Adong who is also the General Secretary of the Uganda Fencing Association said such baby steps will get Uganda to the high table. And the Uganda Olympic President William Blick couldn’t agree more. “So far we have through established clubs, fortunately, these clubs are also centered and also established within the regional centers. And we are helping out in developing clubs.” Said, Caroline Adongo – Fencing Master. “Fencing is a unique and an elite sport but we believe we can spread the sport through schools to give Ugandans another opportunity of winning medals.” Said, William Blick – U.O.C President.
The five participants of this Olympic solidarity course from the West and Eastern parts of the country took back certificates and were charged with the task of spreading the gospel of foil fencing in their respective regions. Currently, there are only 169 fencers in Uganda but with such courses, this number is bound to increase.
Five participants from the East and western region of the country finalized the 14 day Olympic Solidarity fencing course at games international school in Butabika.
