The World under 20 Cross Country Champions Jacob Kiplimo and Beti Gidi took their honors at the 86th Edition of the Cinque Mulini in Italy. The event is the 6th of the IAFF Cross Country Permit Circuit. Kiplimo won the Men’s 11km race in 34 minutes followed by Ethiopia’s Tila Hong Pekele by 17 seconds while Gidi held off Kenya’s Daizy Chepkemei by 4 seconds in a close 6km Women’s race.
In the Men’s race, an 8-man leading group formed by Eritrea's Kob Kob Geblu, Kenya’s Peter Ndegwa, Italy’s Yemane Bellang Kripper, Ethiopia’s runners Taye Germar and Hail Taylor hun went through the second lap in 9 minutes 17. The leading park was whittled down to 6 men when Bekeleng, Ndegwa, Kiplimo, Geblu, Gerimar, and Kripper pushed the race going through the third lap in 17 minutes 44. Kiplimo and Bekeleng increased their pace pulling away from the chasing 3-man group formed by Ndegwa, Kipper, and Germar and opened up a gap of 16 seconds during the 4th lap.
Kiplimo broke away from Berkeley during the last lap dropping him by 17 seconds and went on to win in 34 minutes. Taye Germar prevailed in the battle for 3rd place in 34 minutes 31, edging Ndegwa and Kipper. Kiplimo became the first Ugandan to win the Cinque Mulini since Boniface Kiprop’s triumph in 2004.
