The FDC party held its Delegates Conference at Namboole stadium and it's here that the new President Patrick Oboi Amuriat was elected. Among their suppliers was one Steven Wafula who said he gave them flyers, invitations, and party cards among other stationery. NTV got the news that Wafula had locked himself in one of the offices at Najjanankumbi Headquarters to protest the delayed payment. The security personnel at the gate denied the team entry.
The man informed NTV through a telephone call that he had blockaded himself in since Monday. “I want them to pay because I have been here for so long.” He says that since the Conference in November he had not been paid. “I have been promised that I would get paid several times but the party seems not to be willing to do so.” The guard attempted to close the window to bar us from getting pictures.
FDC officials admitted that the party owed Wafula money. “It’s barely that we have not even made a month since he delivered. We have even had issues how he performed his work but we said no since we know you we shall pay you. But he came and locked himself in our office, closed windows that we cannot even talk to him.” Said, Harold Kaija – Deputy Secretary General, Forum for Democratic Change. Wafula also claimed that there was another debt that dated five years back. “I have been patient for five years.” “Are you also demanding money for the last Delegates Conference?” “Yes, and other debts that they are aware of.”
“For us, we are in office for three years. But when we are taking over office we are given a handover report. By the handover report, his name does not appear as one of our creditors.” Said the Deputy Secretary-General FDC. Wafula said that the party’s Secretary General Nandala Mafabi was responsible for signing his cheque. “When I contacted them, I was told that I should wait to Nandala (Mafabi) to sign my cheque.” “I haven’t done the reconciliation because am told my staff has no access to the office, likewise, even the cheques he wants me to sign are inside there, so how do I sign?” Said, Nandala Mafabi – Secretary General, Forum for Democratic Change.
FDC’s Harold Kaija said the party owed Wafula 4 million shillings. “We cannot fight the bad leadership of this government when we still have injustices in our party.” “We do not have a track record of not paying our creditors, he is one of them.” But, by the time NTV left, Wafula was still locked inside the offices vowing that he wouldn’t leave until he had received his payment.
