Kitgum Municipality Member of Parliament Beatrice Atim Anywar’s decision to vote for the amendment of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution came as a surprise to the residents of the same Municipality who claim she voted against their will. “While our Honorable Member of Parliament Hon. Atim was doing a consultation, we made it very clear to her that in this Constitution nothing to do with amending Article 102 in Kitgum Municipality should happen. And we strongly emphasized by even tying her head with a red ribbon which I move it. This is what we used to tie Hon. Beatrice Atim while at Kitgum Municipality.”
“She came for the consultation, she asked us and we said yes, we appreciate what the President has done for this Nation, we appreciate what this government has done but we believe that for democracy; we should allow the Constitution to stay the way it is, not to be touched.” The members who were watching the debate live as it was broadcasted on the television started on the process to impeach her. “Traditional leaders and elders within Kitgum Municipality are guiding us the young people on an impeachment plan which we saw a letter and signature collection is beginning.” “Our wanainchi feel cheated by our Members of Parliament because they do not do what we send them to do. But instead, they decided to choose their personal gains and interests.”
Suspended Kiraga North Member of Parliament Anthony Akol said was surprised about the change of heart exhibited by Beatrice Anywar. “It is unfortunate that our people are taken up by resources and it is the level of poverty this government has brought to this country. You will get surprised, Hon. Beatrice Anywar who consulted her people in Kitgum Municipality, the people even gave her a red ribbon and they said to move with this up to the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. It is unfortunate that people like Okello Oryem and many others even those in the NRM were informed clearly by their voters that they should never accept for the amendment of Article 102 (b).” It is on record that the majority of the people in Kitgum Municipality voted against the lifting of the age limit.
