A section of Opposition lawmakers led by Rukungiri Municipality MP Roland Mugume told the news conference that they would intensify their red ribbon campaign. “We are decaying next week as Togikwatako week for all Ugandans. This time we don’t want to say this is for FDC, for NRM, for UPC, for DP, it is for all Ugandans.” Said, Roland Mugume – Rukungiri Municipality MP. This new stance came nearly a week after the Parliamentary Affairs Committee met the President to seek for his views on the contentious Constitutional amendment Bill. However, the Opposition sounded a clearing in Court for citizens to reject the Bill which sought to amend the age limit provision currently capped at 75 years in the Constitution. “And I think we will succeed in the interim to have a joint press conference that cuts across the board so that the people of Uganda know that the people opposed to the age limit are not the traditional politicians. There will be a joint press conference with all members of NRM, of all members who are saying no Togikwatako.” Said, Muwanga Kivumbi – Butambala County MP.
However, the government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo told NTV that if the group was civil in its conduct they will be accommodated. “Even if people wear ribbons across the country but they remain peaceful, they are not obstructive, they are not destructive, they are not obstructing others from going about their daily chores which they earn, and the government would have no problem with them.” Said, Ofwono Opondo – Government Spokesperson. Opondo also said that this was not the first time the Opposition had issued such threats which had not attracted grounds of wall resentment. “They made similar threats that they would go to the gym, they did not succeed. I think they are now being stunned by their failure to physically prevent Hon. Raphael Magyezi from presenting his motion.” Said Ofwono Opodo.
“Sometimes they need to agree with the laws they themselves make. So if the law guides and over step that, why should they again get sympathy from the views.” Said, Emilian Kayima – Police Spokesperson.
The Opposition MPs argued that the President’s suggestion to change the Presidential term from 5 to 7 years was a red hearing. “So all that is to divert Ugandans and for us, we are not in for that.” “It can only be effective in the 11th Parliament not this.” But some ruling party legislators said this was a good proposal. “We need to set time appropriately now for members or leaders at all levels to fulfill their objectives. For example now; we are in the second year whatever we planned to work for these people when we were looking for votes, we have not done anything and they are there watching us.” Said, Gordon Bafaki – Kazo County MP. “You need time even the President himself needs time to fulfill what Ugandans were promised.” Said, Steven Kangwagye – Bukanya County. It was expected that the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee would table its report in a house plenary full debate.
