FDC Activist Sues Police Over Torture And Kidnap

An Opposition Youth Activist Zerida Kakayi who is a member of the Forum for Democratic Change Party claimed that she was kidnapped on the 11th May 2016 during the FDC demonstration near the Christ of the King Church in Kampala by Police officers. She claimed that the operation was led by Nickson Agasirwe the former Commander of the Police Special Operations Division who was on remand over an unrelated case of kidnap. “And there are witnesses who were there when he was arresting me on that day. So he is one of the suspects.” Said, Zerida Kakayi – FDC Activist.

Kakayi later told NTV that she was later blind folded and driven for many hours. She later found herself dumped in Aswa Sub-county in Gulu district where she was rescued by residents following five days of torture. “I sustained a number of injuries such as back injuries, sight and also I had been injected by some chemicals.” Kakayi filed a case at the High Court Civil Division through her Lawyers of Rwakafuzi and Company Advocates. She seeks compensation for torture and general damage. “I have spent a lot of money in terms of my medication, upkeep. It has not been easy so I would love also to be compensated.”

“Nickson is in the Court answering other cases and he has no kind of money to pay her. You see, so, it does not make sense to go after someone who cannot pay damages even if he is given an order. So let the government pay because Nickson has always said he is the state and the state is him.” Said, Ladislaus Rwakafuzi – Human Rights Lawyer. But the Police Spokesperson Emilian Kayima denied knowledge of Kakayi’s case claiming that she never reported her case to any Police Station. “She has told you that she didn’t report anywhere at the Police Station so how can we detect this, how can we make a follow-up? How can we be of service to her?”
