The procession was to start at the JKIA to Uhuru Park for a public rally. According to NASA’s notice to the Police drafted by Esifuna and Associates, Police put a damper on NASA’s party interrupting the grand planned reception and cutting down into the steady stream of supporters already pouring into the Airport. The Police had written back warning that NASA’s plans amounted to a threat to Airport Security and they were defending their push back. The Interior Ministry Spokesperson Mwenda Njoka said the Police was only doing their job to keep things normal as their match could have greatly affected other Airport users as he put it “If you take a million people to the Airport to receive someone, what happens to the other Airport users, they have rights too, and all rights are equal.” The Ministry also defended the Police use of what they said was a moderate force. The Police said they only used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protestors and that no live ammunition was used, dismissing claims of an attempt on NASA’s Raila Odinga’s life as propaganda.
Law enforcement also looked at episodes of violence that followed the procession including five people who they said were stoned after being caught stealing. 2 along the lands road, 2 next to a bus station and one along Riscoce road. They said all these episodes happened before the Police got to the scene. They also investigated the destruction and looting of private property especially along Mombasa road, Outring road, Airport North road and Haile Selassie road. They asked anyone who might have been be assaulted or who might have lost property in any way to report to the nearest Police station. The Interior Ministry said those identified as looters would have to take individual responsibility for their action.
