Members of the ruling NRM party in Kabale and Rubanda districts endorsed to the proposal to amend Article 102 (b) of the Constitution seeking to remove the 35-year lower and the 75-year upper age limits for Presidential candidates. “We decided as Kabale district, the Constitution should be amended and movement should go ahead.” “Those who say we should go touch it and organize it, raise your hands.” This was during the meeting by members of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) traversing the Western parts of the country to popularize the Constitutional amendment. They called on the delegates who attended the meeting to rally locals in the amendment. “Let’s decide on it now, we finish it and go into service delivery. And from this, we want to work on it by December.” Said, David Bahati – State Minister for Finance. “We remove that age limit Clause and do what we as Ugandans.” Said, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi – CEC Member. “Without doubts, the question of whether we touch or not is a gone case.” Said, Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda – Prime Minister.
The decision to traverse the region followed a decision by CEC to re-enforce Members of Parliament currently carrying out consultations. While speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, the Prime Minister said the meetings were also meant to convince NRM members opposed to the proposal to drop their stance. “Those are being called upon to come and toy the movement line which is support for the Constitutional amendment.” Said the Prime Minister. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and his team will travel to Rukiga and Kanungu on Thursday and will finalize with Rukungiri district on Friday.
