All started with a peaceful proceeding of Besigye’s convoy as they headed for a rally for Patrick Amuriat as an FDC Presidential Candidate. But as they reached Kaunda grounds there was heavy Police present. Besigye’s convoy then drove towards the Police only to be stopped by the armed Police officers. Dr. Besigye and his team locked themselves in their cars as the Police tried to teargas them. The commanding officer was seen making a series of phone calls as they looked for a way to force Besigye out of the car. The Police accused the two FDC officials of not notifying them.
“I want to have a dialogue with you because I am not informed of your being here and the purpose for which you are here. I am not informed.” “We sought the necessary clearance in the Police headquarters and we were granted this clearance. We are therefore taken aback by this heavy deployment.” “The same Police is telling lies to Ugandans that all people are free to consult, that political parties and parties in the Opposition are free to hold the rallies but you can see the freedom they talk about. This is not the first place, our rallies were stopped in Mbale, were stopped in Soroti, were stopped in Lira yesterday and this is what is going on.” Besigye’s car was later towed to Gulu Police Station.
