It was a narrative of an action parked movie only this time not acted. The hashtag Rukungiri (#Rukungiri) continued to trend both on Social Media equally dominating headlines as it turned into a battlefield between FDC’s Dr. Kizza Besigye supporters and the Police officers. By the close of the day, one person was killed on the frontline. The home of the Police officer who allegedly took the shoot was in the night destroyed by the angry residents.
Opposition strongman, Dr. Kizza Besigye whose failed rally led to the skirmishes refuted claims he was behind the kills. “The permissions were duly and properly granted by the Uganda Police. The ground they were preventing us to enter had been properly paid for.” Said Dr. Kizza Besigye. Besigye claimed that even though the body of the deceased was rushed to Kambuga Hospital for Postmortem, the government influenced the outcomes. “I hear that the government said in a report indicated that it is a stone that caused the death of the deceased. But am also a medical doctor, I was the first to examine the body of the deceased while at the scene he was hit. I observed and found out that it was a bullet that killed him.”
Meanwhile, the number of those injured during the scuffle rose to 6 with the victims claiming gunshots. The four-time Presidential aspirant visited them in Nyakibale Hospital where he found the injured including Bangirana Farouq, Junior Ayolele, Christopher Muhwezi, Narisi Muhumuza and Danson Musingura. Among them were those allegedly shot in the lower abdomen. Besigye promised to take legal action against the actions of the Police.
The former Presidential candidate then got on the road to Kisoro where he was going to address a rally. However, his journey was cut short by the Police officers at Bulambira in Rubanda district. This paralyzed traffic for hours until the Police finally towed his car. Besigye was later on arrested and charges opened against him. “He commanded the stoning of the Policemen and made an unlawful assembly. Therefore, we have arrested him and the others to go and answer charges.” Besigye vowed to continue the struggle against what he called the dictatorship of President Museveni.
