Age Limit Protests Launched In Eastern Uganda

The launch of the red ribbon campaign in Bukeddi attracted FDC delegates from several districts of the Sub-region. “Today, we are launching it, we are standing with all the Ugandans to say enough is enough.” Said, Taaka Wanaha – Chairperson Red Ribbon Campaign, Bukeddi. Speaker after speaker said it was time for the Ugandans to come out openly and say no to the amendment of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution. “Because the liberation struggle of this country was won out of blood, bloodshed and so we are saying stop this.” Said, Patrick Oboi Amuriat – FDC Presidential Candidate.

The Opposition members said after they were suffocated in the Parliament, they moved to the people who held the power to tell them the dangers of having the Article amended. “Since you cannot allow us to say it in the Parliament since we cannot stop this in the Parliament, you have pushed us out, and we shall go to the people.” Said, Francis Mwijukye – MP Buhweju County.

While in Mbale, the consultation on the amendment by the Mbale Woman MP Connie Galiwango turned firry as angry residents she had gone to consult carried placards to candidly express their sentiments against the removal of the age limit. In some places, residents chose to pray for her while holding anti-age limit placards. They also composed songs in Lugisu which they sang for the Woman MP. Some residents demanded that the restoration of term limits should cut across all political leaders, right from LCI. Connie Galiwango vowed not to betray the people she represented but take their message back to the Parliament. “You have told me that you don’t want the Article to be touched and that is what I will take to the Parliament.” Said, Connie Galiwango – Mbale Woman MP.
