Opposition MPs Continue Their Campaign Against Proposed Constitutional Amendments

Kira Municipality MP Semujju Nganda persuaded citizens of Kasokoso to attend a meeting at Kiganda Zone where Opposition politicians were scheduled to speak about the government’s draft law on the compulsory acquisition of land. There was a heavy Police presence at the event that was attended by women, children and the elderly. Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who kicked off the speeches criticized the government for parceling out land to the rich. “The Constitution is the foundation of this country.” Said the Kampala Lord Mayor. “How many are going to embark on this journey?” Said the Leader of Opposition. “When they get the land they will give it to someone else just like the Naguru land.” “Whether you use your feet or a bicycle, all of us will head to the Parliament.” “The new Bill is meant to legalize the ongoing “theft”.” “The reason our forefathers signed the 1900 agreement was because of land and no one should play with the land.” “When you ignore us and they remove you from this land, do you think your MP will be affected?” “We want Museveni to know that we shall trade with China but we shall not give them our land.”

Locals in Kasokoso are regarded brave and courageous for resisting land grabbers and now politicians are using this area as a launch pad to oppose the Land Amendment Bill and lifting of the age limit. “I was in Bushenyi and they rejected the idea. You Kasokoso residents should also say no!” “He says he got a degree at Dar-es-salaam, I’m not against his qualification. I bet ten million shillings for whoever can bring a photo of Museveni’s graduation with a gown.” said Nambooze. the sensitization campaign in Kasokoso came weeks after the Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana introduced the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2017. One of the amendments in the Bill sought to grant the government the power to acquire private land for development projects before concluding the transactions with the land owner. The legislators planned to take their sensitization campaign to Mukono district next.
