For most of the Monday afternoon, Bobi Wine’s songs could be heard throughout the Kampala neighborhood of Kamwokya as groups of mostly youthful residents celebrated the release of the musician turned politician after nearly two weeks in detention.
The residents were jubilant because the High Court in Gulu had just granted the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament bail after a brief spell in detention that was a result of dramatic series of events that were set in motion after Robert Kyagulanyi was arrested in Arua Municipality on 14th August.
Kyagulanyi’s elder brother Eddy Nyanzi was keen to point out that while the people of Kamwokya had a good reason to celebrate the release of one of their own. “We appreciate the efforts our comrades have put in, we appreciate the patience of the detainees, and we appreciate every Ugandan.” Said, Fred Nyanzi – Kyagulanyi’ Brother.
The jubilant Kamwokya dwellers spoke proudly of the man they all still called Bobi Wine. “…must do, our generation and the generation above us is to appreciate that these problems which we have done on his country must be solved by this generation.
” However, while the celebrations were going on, the Police and the army maintained a visible presence. The people were not deterred by the presence of the men in uniform as they went about their celebrations.
However, the people of Kamwokya might have to wait for a while before they can see Bobi Wine because he is reportedly in poor health and will have to first receive medical treatment for the injuries received after allegedly being tortured while in detention.
