On Sunday President Yoweri Museveni expressed his dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Electoral Commission had handled the just concluded by-elections in the districts of Jinja, Bugiri and Arua.
“Why should you suffer from corrupt election officials when the NRM has got so much manpower, they should get out? Like for instance in the elections in Jinja, I discovered so many ghost voters who were imported from other areas to come and vote there. Who imported them? It is these elected officials.” Said, H.E Yoweri Museveni – President of Uganda.
The Electoral Commission has now constituted a team of seven electoral officials which has been tasked to investigate the claims about the integrity of voters’ register in the selected districts.
“In light with the current concerns about the integrity of the National Voters’ Register. The commission is reviewing reports on the by-elections and has appointed a technical committee to investigate any claims related to the integrity of the register with a view of establishing the facts about the claims.” Said, Jotham Taremwa – Spokesperson, Electoral Commission.
The Spokesperson of the Electoral Commission Jotham Taremwa said that the commission will ensure that all claims brought to its attention will be handled professionally.
“The commission appreciates such stakeholder criticisms because they are a feedback that informs the commission on the quality of the electoral service delivery and the areas that may require the commission’s attention.” Said, Jotham Taremwa – Spokesperson, Electoral Commission.
Taremwa said that the commission was still committed to delivering free, fair and transparent elections whose cornerstone is a credible National Register.
