Uganda’s National Netball team coach Imelda Nyongesa will bank on the international exposure of some of her key players as she aims for gold at the World University Netball Championships this month.
Three of the girls including Mary Nubba, Joan Nampungu, and Betty Kiiza were part of the She Cranes team that defended the Africa Title in Zambia last month. Despite being pulled in a relatively tough group that has USA, Singapore, and Kenya, the coach and players were bullish ahead of the games. "The strength of the team is not all that bad. Where I have put my effort because most of them have ever played these international games. I have about 5 or 6 who have been on the National Team and those ones who went to Burundi for East Africa and then I have 3 who went to Zambia for qualifiers." Said, Imelda Nyongesa – Coach, University Netball.
“We have been training for African Championship, East African Championship so we are fit just because we are looking for some coordination here and there. Because we are from different clubs and different universities. And there is no team that is going to give us hard time. The only team which is going to give us hard time is South Africa but it is beatable.” Said, Joan Nampungu – University Netball Player.
Pull B of the 8 team Tournament will see defending Champions South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka low horns. Uganda will be hoping to build on their fourth-place finish as the second edition of the games last year in Miami USA where they lost to Australia in the Bronze medal match.
