A four-stored-building under construction in the Kampala suburb of Buziga collapsed injuring two people who were rushed to a nearby clinic. People living in the vicinity of the construction site gave their accounts of what transpired just before and immediately after the building collapsed. “At around 11:30 that’s when it collapsed down. It is suspected to be like two or three are missing and one was rescued by myself whom I rescued with my own equipment.” Said, Sariya Segawa – Buziga Resident. “The construction speed was too much, they were building day and night. The cement was still wet when we rescued the young man yet they were still pouring cement on the other side.” Said, Sumaya Segawa – Buziga Resident. “The problem is the negligence of the engineer, he never followed the instructions of the building that’s why the building collapsed. Instead of two floors, they had extended going to the third floor.” Said, Kenneth Damba – Buziga Resident.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hassan Khanda said investigations into what might have caused the building to collapse had begun. “On our arrival, we managed to do our level best to ascertain if there was anybody trapped there, we first got the other team of constructors; they were 22 in number and all of them were alive and then we had one askari also alive. However, we are looking for people they say were about four or three people sweeping inside the building of which one was trapped while trying to get out the boy and was rushed to martyrs’ clinic in Munyonyo and another woman. So we don’t know whether there is one or two remaining or they also escaped and went straight to their homes, we are not certain.” Said, Hassan Khanda – Assistant Commissioner Police, Fire, and Disaster.
Meanwhile, despite all people on the site having been accounted for, the Police Fire and Rescue Team continued to dig through the rabble to make sure nobody was trapped underneath. All 22 builders including an askari who were trying to construct this four-stored-building have been confirmed alive. However, there are more questions than answers on what transpired when this building was being constructed this morning.
