First Pilgrims Arrive at Namugongo

The pilgrims from Mbarara and Bushenyi arrived at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine after walking for twelve days. They were thankful to God that they finally made it here. "It is not that we are here because we have nothing to do but we are trying to remember what they were doing and why they were doing so." Around the shrine, there was not much activity although preparations were already going on. Engineers are working around the clock to set up barricades to avoid possible disasters due to the big crowds that characterize this place in the buildup and on Martyrs Day itself. “Those guard rails are very important for the control of overcrowding in a particular point which can cause suffocation and leads to loss of lives.”

What will be different this time around is that pilgrims will not have to struggle to get water from the pond adjacent to the shrines, water taps have been constructed instead. In addition to the toilets, the pilgrims will pay to use will now be free. “There is no need for pilgrims to struggle for water from the lake, water taps have been constructed.” Said, Fr. Joseph Mukasa Muwonge. The Tororo Archi Dioceses is expected to arrive on Monday the 28th and already some choirs have taken the opportunity to shoot a music video before the shrine becomes congested with pilgrims.
