Floods Block Mbale- Manafwa Road

Transport and business had been paralyzed along the Mbale-Manafwa road connecting to the Uganda-Kenya border at Rwakhakha after flash floods erupted in the area following a heavy downpour. The floods which washed over 3 bridges in Namweke village in Butiru Sub County came as a result of river Kamizalo bursting its banks. Traders, workers, and passengers were seen stranded over failing to cross the river after the road became impassable for vehicles. When NTV visited the areas, some people could be seen being carried across while others were on boda-boda motorcycles. Some locals revealed to NTV that they had been stranded for over hours and for the last three days, the water levels had been on the rise. "Before 4 am, they were there watching what was happening but the waters were increasing from time to time. "For me, I have lasted here for over three hours. I am a health worker, working in Mbale district but I stay in Namisindwa.”

According to the LC V Chairperson of Manafwa district John Musila, the situation was worsening and three people had died in the last three weeks due to severe floods. Musila wanted the Uganda National Roads Authority to intervene in the matter as part of their mandate. β€œThe other day just three days ago it killed another. One called Mihama which pours into the same river killed someone. So we have a problem and a danger that if we remain like that; we have children who may risk crossing and in the end we have problems. My appeal is to government especially UNRA to move faster because this is a bigger bridge.” Said, John Musila – Manafwa District Chairperson. Traders in Manafwa district revealed that they were stranded with their goods that they were taking to Kenya and they requested the government to intervene and help them.
