Amuru Farmers Storm Parliament

By 1 pm, the group had paraded at parliament carrying documents directed to the speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga for her indulgence. The over 200 delegations were received by Kilak MP Anthony Akol. The out growers pinned the Finance Minister Matia Kasaija who encouraged the large-scale growing of sugarcane after government's assurance that Atiak Sugar Factory would be ready by the year 2018. Akol said they had documents that revealed that Bank of Uganda had directed the Minister of Finance to release funds for Holdings Company Limited, the company undertaking development led by Doctor Lady Amina Hass. "I cannot just sit back with no direction. Madam Speaker we are being used by the government to advertise the development to our region but the fact on the ground we are stuck in a never-ending circle of poverty." Said, Anthony Akol – MP Kilak.

The Speaker also expressed shock on the lack of progress made in the construction of Atiak Sugar Factory. β€œIn fact am surprised that money is not available because at some point I called the Minister of Finance in my office to tell him to make sure that money is sent to the factory and I thought it was finished. So am really surprised that this has really not happened. So am going to arrange to call the Minister again, call the governor but also, at the same time I will send the petition to the Committee so that you can also come for a public hearing because you cannot come to the plenary.” Said, Alitwala Kadaga – Speaker of Parliament. President Museveni cautioned that sugarcane growing should be the reserved for farmers with over 60 acres.
