The scene at Kiryandongo hospital was one of desperation as patients lay helpless with little regard from staff who felt their hands tied. The hospital currently hosts over 300 patients. Given the emergency cited by the road carnage, the hospital management said it was ill-prepared to meet the needs. “When people normally have these kinds of accidents, it normally depletes our resources just even a single day or in just two days. So our request to the government and to the people is to understand and look at this hospital.” Said, Sam Mutiti – Kiryandongo Hospital.
22 lives were claimed in an accident involving a bus, a tractor, and a lorry. Kiryandongo District Chairperson Charles Ntairehoki said the Friday incident coincided with the drug stock out in the region. " the antibiotics are really off, we have identified the IV fluids we use in the theatre is off, no single glove, we don't have the cotton, we don't have the goose, we don't have the painkillers, and we don't have forage." Said, Charles Ntairehoki – Kiryandongo District Chairperson. The hospital currently hosts over 300 patients. Given the emergency cited by the road carnage, the hospital management says it is ill-prepared to meet the needs. “In the view that the catchment area has increased, the hospital is actually serving as a referral for most of the districts in the North. Most of the districts like Apac, Nakasongola even Masindi is referring here, even Bulisa.”
Charles Ntairehoki the Kiryandongo District Chairperson faulted the road network for the mess and gave the Uganda National Roads Authority an ultimatum. “We are only giving UNRA one month, by end of June, if there are no humps put between Kafu and Karuma, we are going to mobilize the community of Kiryandongo and well-wishers. Those who will give us cement, those who will give us sand, those who will give us aggregates and we put humps on the black spots that we identified.” His sentiments are identical to bus driver’s body that also pointed fingers at the roads body for overseeing risky roads. On 27th May, the government declared three days of national mourning for the victims, some survivors are still battling for their lives at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
