The Energy Ministry said construction work on Karuma Hydro Power Project was at 75% while the other project of Isimba was at 80%. Other projects in the pipeline include Kiba, Oryang, Ayago, and Uhuru. It is based on this that the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Irene Muloni gave assurance that the current capacity of 950 MGW will double in the next year. “Within the next one year or so, we should have doubled our capacity to about 2,000 MGW.” Said, Irene Muloni – Minister of Energy and Mineral Development.
According to Muloni, only 22% of Ugandans have access to power and this translates into high power tariffs which possess a great challenge. However, the government was ready to distribute power to all Sub Counties countrywide after securing a loan of 200 million USD. “Work is now going to commence as soon as this loan which is now before parliament is passed so that we have different teams in the country carrying on with the work.” The Minister is however concerned about landowners who take advantage of government projects to demand money whenever there are plans for power lines to go through their property. “We want cheap electricity, we want everything a very low price but yet where the electricity is passing; for us, we are pushing the prices of land up.”
The Minister reported that it had surveyed 80% of all Uganda's minerals and 20% left in the Karamoja sub-region. “We know which mineral exists where.” Ugandans have been assured that only 30% of the oil revenue will go to the licensed extracting oil companies while the 70% will be government revenue.
