UPDF Soldier Arrested for Giving His Gun to Brother

Police in Tororo arrested Captain Sam Omuluga, a UPDF officer attached to the Military Headquarters in Kampala following reports that he had given Nicholas Olupot the Asinje Village LC I Chairperson a gun to keep for close to eight years. His arrest followed a series of complaints from Mela Sub County residents that there was an illegal gun in the area which was being used to terrorize the community. In response, Police intervened, conducted a search and arrested Olupot after he was found with a gun, two magazines, and 56 bullets rounds of ammunition. Olupot told Police that he was given the gun by his cousin brother Sam Omuluga a Captain attached to the Military Headquarters. “…you go there are coming for it, so I decided to keep then I waited for Police to come. Then when Police comes so that I can get that gun to give them.”

With the help of UPDF, Captian Omuluga was traced, arrested and brought to Tororo CPS under tight security to answer to the allegations. However, Captain Omuluga denounced his cousin brother, instead claimed that he had helped Police recover the gun. “…I led the Police and the army to recover a gun that I had a tip from the community that there is an LC I possessing the gun.” He accused Oluput of tarnishing his name. “A suspect after being picked, he claimed that you who is trying to pin me I will say the gun is yours.” After close to 30 minutes of interrogation, Captain Omuluga was driven away to Lubongi Army Barracks while Olupot remained at the Tororo CPS pending investigations.

Abdul Malik Achileng the Mela LC I Chairperson challenged the security personnel to conduct more searches of the houses in the area to recover more guns since the community was living in fear. "Truth wise, it scares us as leaders that may be this gun was used as a place for keeping and it was doing other things in other places?" Security officers refused to comment on the matter when contacted.
