A staggering 2 trillion shillings has been invested by the government in constructing technical colleges, renovating existing colleges, and building capacity of instructors among other activities under the Skilling Uganda Strategic Plan. Ruth Biyinzika the Head of Schools' Development Facility under the private sector foundation said not all was well in these institutes in the face of the changing technology. “To feel the need the gap we have in the industrial sector because every industry uses for example power. You need people who are technicians, you need people who install all these things in the whole chain of the manufacturing sector it’s by these people for repair and looks after it. And what was missing in Kabasanda is that they really wanted to close that gap. Because most of their training was more theoretical in some of these areas. So we hope that this may be an example and a motivation to the rest.”
Since it’s the private sector that absorbs most of the students under the World Bank program of Skilled Development Fund, PSFU has earmarked 1.2 billion shillings to Kabasanda Technical Institute in Mpigi district. “I want to encourage more training institutions in Uganda to offer courses that the industry and the businesses want. Because we have had a number of training institutions that don’t have the latest technology.” Nakakande Hadija the Principal of Kabasanda pledged to put the money to use. “All departments have gaps but this is going to critically reinforce mechanical department and electrical. So we are going to deal with those gaps in mechanical drives, mechatronics, normatics, hydraulics and others that will help the industry to do mass production, precision, and quality.”
