Looking South of the Nile Bridge on your way to Kampala or Jinja town, one will obviously notice a magnificent new cable-stayed bridge. This bridge is being positioned from both sides and it's about to connect, meaning construction works are nearing completion. The construction works are according to the Uganda National Roads Authority steadily ongoing with the Site Engineers working day and night to beat the deadline. Given that physical works now stand at over 95%, the highly rated bridge is only left with a few meters for the two suspended spans to link.
UNRA officials who toured the bridge were optimistic that come June this year, construction works will be complete. "The work has progressed very well, as I talk now, we expect this work of the bridge to be complete by the end of June this year 2018. And of course, they will have to do a bit of clean up before it is opened to the general public to use and to move goods and services. So we are expected by September – October this year, this bridge will be ready for use by the government of Uganda and our neighboring countries DRC, Rwanda and also the Central Africa Republic where they also pass their goods." "525 meters long, it will carry dual carriageway on either side of the road; which means two vehicles will be crossing at the same time on both left and right-hand side, it will have barriers to protect the pedestrians."
With the variation in the currency, Eng. Lawrence Pariwu said that their loan request was completed and it is in the final stages. "….finances required for completing the bridge was being passed by Parliament I think by today or tomorrow, once that is passed we will soon be able to complete," UNRA said that if money is released to the contractors, the bridge will be completed on time and open to road users. The new bridge will be the second cable-stayed bridge in East Africa after Tanzania’s Kigamboni Bridge which was commissioned last year in April. The entire Jinja Bridge is approximately 525 meters long and has a design lifespan of 120 years.
