Legislators Protest Meager Funding For Malaria

Moses Balyeku the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Forum against Malaria has expressed discontent over the continued poor resource allocation towards the fight against malaria that continues to claim lives across the country. "As the government of Uganda, we are only putting 5% of the actual budget of malaria Which is actually a shame on our side as a government because 95% is donor funded." Said, Moses Grace Balyeku – MP Jinja West. According to Dr. Jimmy Opigo the Programs Manager, Malaria Control Program, the number of lives lost due to malaria is regrettable. “We have moved from a situation where malaria was killing over 300 people per day to less than 15 per day. However, it is a problem because 15 people dying per day is still bad enough. We would like to eliminate these deaths and then make malaria history.” Said, Dr. Jimmy Opigo – Malaria Control Program.

Legislators are concerned that even with the investment towards eliminating malaria, these figures continue to glare calling for a malaria fund to address the disease. “We still don’t seem to be winning the battle against malaria. The involvement of Parliament is very important because it brings the political will and you know it’s in Parliament where we can appropriate the funds, advocate for an increase of funds in the budget of Health Ministry especially targeted on malaria. We are also looking at developing a malaria fund which we are going to urge every Ugandan citizen and foreigners and donors to support.” Said, Okabe Patrick – MP Serere Municipality. MPs have resolved to establish a forum that they will use to reach their electorates that will be launched by President Museveni tomorrow.
