Residents of Nalutuntu and Bukoba villages in Mubende district have been involved in a long-running wrangle with businessman Abid Alam of land measuring about 7 Square miles. “They attacked us and burnt all our houses.” The land was allegedly given to Ex-servicemen by the British Colonialists as a token for their role in the World War. Mubende District Resident Commissioner Evelyne Kiiza Tinkamarirwe appeared before the Commission this morning on allegations that she connived with the businessman to evict hundreds of the people from the land.
“Your system is actually skilled against them and that in fact, you are in bed with Abid Alam.” “I have not been on Abid’s side, if they are very sincere, all the time from when these land issues were.” “And when you keep saying things like I do not know why they did not report to… honestly, where do you expect these people to report?” “The Police is in the pocket of Abid Alam?” “The Police may not be working for Abid Alam.” “Can you imagine when the armed workers assault those people, shoot them and cut them nobody takes anybody to Court?”
The Commission is concerned that even when residents report cases at Police, they are ignored in favor of the businessman. “You are all siding with the rich people in Mubende and the poor people have nowhere to report. Abid Alam has also brought foreign workers to work on his land, you have never investigated them, and so what moral authority now do you have?” After intense interrogation, the RDC admitted that she had made some mistakes and pleaded for mercy. “I have learned a lot from this Commission and I appreciate my Lord and am going back. My Lord I request that you give time, you will see that there is a change because I have learned a lot, this is a lesson.”
