Maria Nalunkuma a resident of Kabule Zone in Luweero Town Council went to Luweero Health Center IV seeking family planning services in early January. She received a contraceptive implant meant to last for 3 years. “I asked them for a contraceptive implant that lasts 3 years.” She said that however, the complications started a day after. “The expiry date showed November 2017. When my husband returned home, I told him about it. After some days I returned to the hospital because I was in so much pain but they refused to remove it.”
After 15 days of discomfort, Nalunkuma and her husband decided that the implant should be removed. “I forced her to go and tell the doctors to have the implant removed.” Said, Salim Mugodha – Nalunkuma’s Husband. She said that this time she went to a different facility where she was informed that the implant expired in November last year. “When the bleeding became really heavy, I checked the date again and confirmed that it was expired.” Her husband Salim Mugodha says they reported the case to Police.
Dr. Sarah Ogobi the Officer In charge at Luweero Health Center IV said the implant could not have come from the facility because it did not contain a client number and the couple could be harboring ulterior motives. “Our family planning register does not capture names, it only captures the client number because we only give them client numbers and these numbers are unique to every client who comes, and they are never shared.” Said, Dr. Sarah Ogobi – In-Charge, Luweero Health Center IV.
Raymond Jjaggwe, the Officer-In-Charge Criminal Investigations at Luweero Police Station handled the case. “Some many probable charges but at hand we have on a charge of administering expired drugs.” Said, Raymond Jjaggwe – CID Officer, Luweero Police Station.
