State prosecutors voted to call off their strike for an unspecified period of time. “The prosecutors have voted to suspend their industrial action following the move by the government to implement commitments the government made in July this year.” Said, David Baxter Bakibinga – Chairperson, Uganda Association of Prosecutors. The decision to call off the industrial action was made during a meeting of the Uganda Association of Prosecutors. The majority of prosecutors voted to end their strike saying they were satisfied with the process of the dialogue they had made with the government over their demands. “Of course other issues are still being handled because they require time like passing an enabling law and issues of promotions. But, overall from what we have so far achieved, I think there are positive steps....”
The Chairperson of Uganda Association of Prosecutors David Baxter Bakibinga said they would resume work as soon as possible. “Tomorrow 12th December, they should be back those in and around Kampala, then on 13th possibly those from further places should be back to work.” The decision of the prosecutors to call off their strike came after the government released a plan to increase salaries of public servants in phases over the next two years.
