Former Buikwe South MP Lulume Bayiga Remanded To Luzira On Obstruction Charges

Former Buikwe South Member of Parliament Dr. Lulume Baiga was driven from the Police Hospital in Naguru Kampala where he had been admitted. The visibly weak Opposition politician was presented before the Grade One Magistrate in Lugazi Buikwe district and charged alongside 15 others with abstracting Police work, causing injury to a Police officer, and holding an unlawful assembly. The former MP denied the charges and was driven back to Kampala where he was remanded to Luzira Prison. Lulume’s Lawyer Aggrey Mushagara said the charges preferred against his client could not stand the legal test. “The accused persons have been remanded to Luzira Prison, however, Dr. Lulume has been sent to a government hospital for a preventive watch until that very day. He could not be sent to prison because of his condition; he has back problems, they beat him as they were trying to arrest him.” Said, Aggrey Mushagara – Lulume’s Lawyer.

Dr. Lulume was arrested on Saturday in Lugazi while giving medical care to people at a health camp organized by the Rotary Club of Mukono. He was therefore admitted to a Police Hospital in Naguru after allegedly sustaining spinal cord injuries he claimed were inflicted by Police officers who brutally arrested him. “When the RPC came, I told him that I have brought the issue of the injury to my back to your attention. I’m a medical doctor and I know what it means.” But the Police Spokesman Emilian Kayima told NTV that if investigations showed that Dr. Lulume was assaulted during the arrest, the officers involved would face the law. “We subjected him to medical attention by his own doctor and by our doctor. Both reports show nothing of that claim exists and these are professionals.” Said, Emilian Kayima – Police Spokesperson.
