It became exactly a year since the army raided the Rwenzururu Kingdom Palace to arrest the Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbele and several of his officials and his Loyal Guards. The events of 27th November 2016 which left close to 100 dead, multiple others injured and over 80 arrested still remained recent after a year.
The army alleged the King’s Loyal Guards were in treasonable activities, they charged the King now under house arrest and several others lined before court. Explaining the continued army deployment, the army Spokesperson Brig. Richard Kalemire said the place was still under threat of rebel work activity from the ADF. “Kasese is stable, the challenge remains in the Eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo where there are hundreds of negative forces of the Allied Democratic Front. We have had good discussions with the Democratic Republic of Congo authorities and we are very positive that they take very appropriate action to make sure that those terrorists do not threaten the security of the people of Eastern DRC and our people in Uganda.” Said, Brig. Richard Kalemire – UPDF Spokesperson.
Kalemire made the comments at the Army Pepping Ceremony held at Mbuya Military Headquarters earlier. At the event, Army Commander Gen. David Muhoozi asked the soldiers to serve their country diligently. “But this level in service opens up opportunities but also a responsibility. Opportunities to lead bigger teams because that is what it is about, opportunities to learn new at the new level, opportunities to handle additional challenges and I want on behalf of the UPDF to state that we think you are all well prepared to cope with the responsibilities of that added rank.” Muhoozi later rated the support of army doctors to the general population a day after the doctors called off their strike. “So we will wait for the Ministry of Health if they still need our services in those very hospitals, we remain available. A question of saving lives remains at the heart of us as the UPDF.” The army on Monday pepped over 300 of the promoted 400 army officers at the Mbuya Army Headquarters in Kampala.
