Traffic Police To Crack Down On Daytime Drunk Driving

The Director of Traffic Dr. Stephen Kasiima spoke on the sidelines of the function to promote behavioral change on road usage. Tweddeko championed by Vivo Energy and NTV Uganda held at Masaka Recreation Grounds where he revealed that the Police will commence its drunk driving operations commonly known as Kawunyemu during daytime. “That truck drivers, kamunye drivers, boda-bodas, and salon cars, sleep in the bars and drive the following day when they are still drunk and they cannot come and adhere in vehicles.” Said, Dr. Stephen Kasiima – Director for Traffic, Uganda Police.

Dr. Kasiima urged bus owners and drivers to refrain from driving more than one route without rest during the festive season. “But for this season we are not going to allow you to make return of routes, we are not. Because as you rightly stated they are human beings and they get tired. And most of these bus drivers drive long distances they drive day and night, they sleep when they are driving.” The Director of Vivo Energy, Gilbert Assi said the campaign to promote behavioral change through Tweddeko messages will be extended to other parts of the country. “And our objective is to really make it something people are looking for and contribute by giving these messages by sharing real testimonies of lives that have been impacted by road traffic accidents.” Said, Gilbert Assi – Managing Director, Vivo Energy.

Joseph Ssenkumba the First Aid Instructor in-charge of disseminating tips on first aid on the Tweddeko promotion urged Ugandans who rush to accident scenes to refrain from the habit of stealing from the accident victims. “The first responders actually just going to steal things, some of them kill the people because of their property. And you have heard the few who want to help will make a call and tell you so and so your friend here is in an accident don’t call on this number again.” Said, Joseph Ssenkumba – First Aid Instructor.
