Politicians and family members of the former president of the Democratic Party Ssebaana Kizito continued to pay home respect to the party leader a day after he died of a stroke. A condolence book was opened at Ssebaana’s home in the city suburb of Kansanga for mourners.
The former president of the FDC party Kizza Besigye was among the politicians who hailed the deceased leader. Besigye expressed sadness about the death of Ssebaana but hit at the government for failing to live up to the democratic ideals which the likes of Ssebaana struggled to achieve. “So I think the legacy is really that there’s and has been a struggle to move from domination of our country to an independent state where citizens are in charge of the country. And that process takes a lot of sacrifice which they made, which therefore the next generations must be inspired by to continue and complete the work that was started.” Said Dr. Kizza Besigye, Former FDC Leader.
The former presidential candidate who worked with Ssebaana in the first NRM government of 1986 said was aware of the challenges Ssebaana faced as a businessman and opposition politician. “It is especially challenging if you are successful in business and you have to challenge the dictatorship because then, you must make very difficult choices. And I think the Hon. John Ssebaana got caught into that dilemma.” Said, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Ssebaana’s young brother Prof. Phares Mukasa had fond memories about his brother during their childhood days in Nakaseke district. “And it came as a shock but of course you know we knew things were not going to go very well because he has been suffering for a long time. He is the only person with whom I have lived since the age of 10 and when we met you know, we started living together when he was 12 and I was 10.” Said, Ssebaana’s Brother, Prof. Phares Mukasa
Meanwhile business people have started minting money from selling T-shirts and calendars with Ssebaana’s pictures. Ssebaana will be buried on Saturday at Mpande village in Luwero district.
