Police Fires Teargas To Quell Clashes Between Two Factions Of Kisekka Market Traders

Today morning, a group of Kisekka market linked to one Geoffrey Kaita brought two cows to the construction site to celebrate a Court victory which recognized Kaita as the market leader. The victory had been as a result of a petition brought by Kaita against one Robert Kisembo Kasolo. The Police did not allow the planned feast to go ahead because they wanted to avert the clash between the rival factions of the market vendors loyal to Kaita and Kisembo. “They hired goons to disrupt our victory celebration.” Said, Geoffrey Kaita – Kisekka Market Leader. “If they applied from ROKO and they got any written document that they are allowed, we would have no problem but these are hooligans who can steal ROKO’s property.” Said, Simon Peter Lubwama - Kisekka Market Spokesperson.

Vendors started throwing stones at the Police prompting them to fire teargas and live ammunition. After the situation normalized the Police picked the cows and took it to the Central Police Station. Although calm was restored, there was tension for the very part of the afternoon as the rivaling groups continued to threaten each other. After about two hours, the Police left and the two groups clashed again. The Police took them on with teargas. The Police combed the building where the suspected people who were throwing stone at them were hiding. Several men were arrested but some managed to escape. In the aftermath of the clashes, the entire area around Kisekka market was littered with stones and broken bricks which were thrown at the Police. Regular Police and the Military Police were put in-charge to make sure that they averted any eventuality.
