Police Relaunches Fika Salama

The kampala -masaka highway was a scene for horrific accidents especially between 2015 and 2016 prompting the police to launch a traffic operation called Fika Salama to enforce discipline on major highways. By December 2016, the operation was being hailed as a success as the number of fatalities had reduced.

However, the operation slowly ground to a halt opening doors to a fresh wave of accidents. the police spokesperson for katonga region Philip mukasa said more than 10 people had died since the beginning of the year along the masaka-kamapla highway. One of the worst accidents claimed the lives of six family members on Sunday 25 June at kalandazi – Mpigi district. Now the men and women in white were back on the road for an operation rebranded as operation Fika Salama reloaded.

“So, we’re here trying to instill discipline and obedience to the law on our roads” said Philip Mukasa police spokesperson, katonga region.

NTV visited some of the spots where the operation was taking place and found long queues stretching half a kilometer in some places. The officers checked each vehicle without exception and for those whose documents were in doubt, technology came in handy. “anybody without a valid driving permit can never go scot free on this road. We shall take you to court and imprison you or fine you according to the law” said police spokesperson Katonga region Philip Mukasa.

Some drivers parked by the road side hoping that the police would leave and they continue with their journey. Others made U- turns to avoid being netted. However, the reaction by the motorists was mixed.
