Construction Of An Emergency Trauma Center At Nkozi Hospital Kicks Off

Every week Nkozi hospital attends to several victims of accidents along Kampala – Masaka road in Mpigi district. Since its inception in 1942 by the missionaries of wei sisters, the hospital has saved thousands of lives from accidents on the Kampala – Masaka road which has also seen its fair share of casualties. In the 75 years, not much attention has been accorded to providing necessary emergency care to accident victims. “This is the only hospital on Kampala – Masaka road and on average we see about 1,500 Out-patients and 550 patients.”

The hospital’s Administrator Sister Tedina Kyanzi worked tirelessly to ensure that the facility got an accident emergency and trauma center. the Prime Minister the Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga and the Archi-Bishop Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga laid a foundation stone for the center which was expected to cost more than 3 billion shillings. Archi-Bishop Lwanga cautioned against a proposal to provide children with contraceptives in a bid to tackle the country’s high teenage pregnancy rate. “Our children from the age of 15 years will be given condoms. That is very sad because the outcomes may not be good. Instead of distributing condoms to these children, let us keep sex for marriage. The reason why God gave man sex is to have the pleasure and produce children.”

Katikiro Mayiga was pessimistic about Uganda’s vision for a middle-income status if the provision of proper health care services for the citizens was not made a priority. “All the efforts geared towards the propagation of political agendas if they were to be channeled to be the extension of health services. I think there would be less conflict in the country because the citizens would be happy. Articles of the Constitution are being used to restrain others from amending the controversial age limit cap Togikwatako, this is for us lawmakers but in medicine, there is a difference in being a mere doctor according to my opinion.”

He said Uganda should concentrate more on providing social services. “It is extremely crucial that we have more social services that politics in Uganda. I had one say that the Baruli have their Kabaka who he is disturbing them. But when the Kabaka organized a health camp, many of the locals lined up in a single line of more than 1,000 people. But since the politicians have failed to better such issues they simply claim that there is a Kabaka responsible for their well-being. I’m is speaking what is difficult for you to understand you locals of Mawokota? That is what Uganda needs if we didn’t spend much of our efforts in fighting one another, in tear gas and demonstrations.” Nkozi hospital is currently managed by Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatricks of Gogonya and accredited to the Uganda Catholic Bureau.
