Heavy rains caused floods that washed away crops mainly along Namasagali and Buyende Wakukuta road. “People are suffering and children are drowning. Leaders should help us rehabilitate the roads.” said one of the settlers.
The cause of the floods was blamed on the poor design of the road, especially the highways which are meant to also create avenues for water drainage. Because the culverts are narrow, they can't contain the volume.
Some locals whose gardens were submerged are worried because they had borrowed money, hoping to recoup some that they would use to repay the loan.
The residents lamented at their maize gardens that were flooded, with one resident expressing worry because most of the money they had invested was borrowed.
Kamuli district environmental officer Samuel Bakaki warned farmers to keep away from the lowlands stating, that they should take on the conservational agriculture, the modern agriculture practices that increase fertility in the upland, so that they don’t rely on wetlands, for their survival.
