Standard Gauge Railway, Residents Concerned Over No Pay

As early as 11 am, the affected residents of Kasoli village in Tororo Municipality had arrived at the offices of the Standard Gauge Railway over delayed compensation over their property. They demanded an explanation from the Area Manager on why their compensation had taken this long. “It is not they are not in support of the project but they need to be compensated. Why can’t the government compensate them? That is the only thing.” “I did not request these people to come to my home, the came willingly with Policemen guarding them. But to date, we are waiting. Even the disclosure alone, why can’t I be told how much am entitled to, so that I plan.”

In response to their complaints, the Area Manager Nathan Etudi apologized for the mess promising that soon the issue would be resolved. “I know the challenges everyone here is going through. Actually, I put myself in your position and I don’t disagree, what you are going through is really terrible and hard.” His response did not go well with the residents who later demanded a specific date of payment. They communicated that failure to comply with the set date, the residents would storm the State House and petition the President over the delayed compensation. “So what is next?” “We are going to State House and we are going to inform the President. If there is an invisible hand in this thing, we are matching to the State House. We are saying enough is enough. We are tired of their Wolokoso, Mambo Jambo.” “We have also said Kisanja Hakuna Mchezo. We are storming the State House direct.” Close to 158 families were affected by the Standard Gauge Railway construction in Kasoli village alone.
