Grief, pain, and frustration engulfed residents of Fasha in Bufundi as they stood in groups or singly looking at what once stood as a beautiful village. All this was now reduced to a mere rubble as locals searched for their dear ones buried underneath. Many houses were washed away and remains of people discovered as far as a distance of 10 km away as a combined force continued the search. The Police had managed to identify few of the dead as Jack Rubeyama, Zatura Edith, Steven Mugira, Ruyoka Paul, Edward Kabanza, Harerimana and John Kasuku. In the eyes of Miria Kesime, she narrated how she witnessed the death of her neighbor. “When the floods came I climbed onto the window but looking through the window I saw drowning people calling for help.”
The residents of Fasha in Muko in Rubanda were just disembarking from the shores of Lake Bunyonyi and this had been an hours’ long search for the bodies of those who were swept away by the debris through the night. Residents combined efforts with the Police on the search for the missing persons and property and discovered more bodies. The District Police Commander Rubanda district Tai Ramadhan put the death at 16. “However, on the ground, we have discovered 16, and yesterday we took 12 people for medical attention. Others are in Kabale Referral and the others we took them to the nearest health centers. And so far we on the ground, but we just need to take more caution but there is a big challenge ahead because now the food has been swept away altogether. So there is the need for a dare help.”
‘’Several people are still missing and the death toll could rise and the search is still on but really it is a disaster to us, the first of its kind in this area’’. The injured were rushed to both Muko health center and Kabale Referral Hospital.
