The Military and the regular Police spent a better part of the day in running battles with Makerere students who were protesting against the plan to amend the Constitution to lift the age limit. Led by the University Guild President Paul Kato, legends converged on the University’s Freedom Square as they sang songs against lifting the age limit. As their number grew, the Police beefed up by the Military Police used tear gas and shot in the air to disperse them. One student was hit by a teargas canister. Students who had hidden inside their houses of residence were picked by the Military Police and detained. In the outskirts of the University, students blocked the roads and businesses were crippled as the Police tried to restore sanity. By the end of the demonstration, over 10 students were arrested and were being kept in different Police stations.
