Entebbe Killings: Local Leaders Question Investigative Methods Of IGP Kayihura, Minister Tumukunde

The woman whose identity wouldn’t not reveal said she was attacked by three men on 16th August and their intention was to kill her. “The assailants pursued me as I returned home from my workplace. I was saved by two men who were nearby and the attackers fled.” She recalled that the assailants were dressed like women in a bid to conceal their identity. “Two men were dressed in gomesi and another in a white shirt while two others monitored.”

Residents in Entebbe area were living in fear after a body of yet another woman Jalia Nalule was found in a bush at Kayilira, Kyewaga in Katabi Division. She was the ninth woman killed in the area in similar circumstances in slightly over a month.

On Monday night the Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura spent a night in Entebbe area patrolling a number of villages. Security Minister General Henry Tumukunde who was also in Entebbe for a similar mission went back on Tuesday. He met fishermen, Boda Boda riders and sex workers at Abayita Ababiri. General Kayihura and Lt. Gen. Tumukunde separately met these sex workers in a bid to stop the killings. “And he told us to meet him tomorrow, the place is not yet known but I heard that we are going to meet him in Kiggo, that side of Kiggo.”

According to Police, most of the victims had been sex workers. “Even if we find out we don’t want to disclose, there’s also that very important factor. Because once you disclose, you can’t pull out the whole chain of these criminals. You need to allow space and first, pick out as many as you can.” Said, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde – Security Minister. But some local leaders questioned the working methods of the Police chief and the Minister for Security. They claimed the two senior government officials had been given conflicting instructions to their juniors and this was likely to affect the investigations especially when the Police was yet to give concrete answers to the questions of who was behind the killings.

“There hasn’t been any coordination between the Minister for Security, Defense, and the IGP. The IGP is giving different instructions and maybe the Minister...” Said, Lameck Kibirige – Chairperson, Kitala Zone. Since July at least nineteen women have been gruesomely murdered by unknown assailants in Wakiso district especially in Nansana Municipality and Katabi Division. Ten women were murdered in Nansana Municipality while nine in Entebbe.
