Residents who live on the shores of Lake Victoria in Masaka district expressed worry over the deadly malaria disease which had caused dumbness among school going children. “Malaria largely affects this area and we appeal to the government to double its support.” Vice President Edward Ssekandi listened to passion pleas of locals at Kindu Catholic Church in kyanamukaka Sub-county seeking government help.
NTV visited one of the schools where they found a 15-year-old girl with a speaking impairment after she was ravaged by Malaria at a tender age. “This girl was studying well until Malaria devastated her life and she cannot cope with normal life.” Her relatives were appealing to the government to provide Malaria drugs to health centers in rural areas and most family. At a health camp, residents including mothers, the elderly and children were given mosquito nets in an effort to fight Malaria.
Ssekandi advised the locals to utilize the mosquito nets. “Let’s avoid using the nets for fishing since the purpose is meant to fight Malaria and keep us alive. The Public Relations Officer Ministry of Health Vivian Nakalika said they have so far given out 18 million mosquito nets across the country. Masaka district has received 400,000 mosquito nets targeted towards reducing the prevalence from 13% to 0%. She said they are giving priority to children and the elderly because they are the most vulnerable group. “Make sure your net is hanging onto you and we are sure once this is done, the other behavioral practice; make sure are clean, your surroundings, you slash, you clean the stagnant water around...” Said the PRO Ministry of Health.
