Police Disperses Nateete Taxi Drivers

The demonstration started peacefully with taxi drivers parking their vehicles at Nateete Taxi Park in the morning. They accused the newly introduced Tricycles of operating illegally. “Why are they allowed to transport more than two people?”

It was the second in a week, that clashes between Tricycle operators and of course taxi operators at the Nateete based Taxi Park were breaking out and the contention was the manner in which these Tricycles or Tuk Tuk as they are locally known were being managed here without proper authorization by the authorities. “We want to know the position of the Town Clerk on this matter because this is illegal. We pay taxes but they don’t, yet we do almost the same job of transporting people.”

The demonstration soon turned rowdy after a section of taxi drivers started a manhunt for all Tricycle riders. Police intervened using tear gas to disperse the now angered drivers. Police called for calmness as the matter was being handled by the leadership of Kampala. “There is a management committee, they know very well what the law says and they need to tell their taxi drivers, conductors, and Tricycle riders clearly what is permitted.“ Said, Peter Ocen DPC Nsangi Police Station. The taxi drivers also claimed that Tricycle riders were fueling criminal activities in the area by transporting cancelled passengers and they vowed to fight the Tricycles.
