Suspect In The Kaweesi Murder Probe Held Without Trial Despite Deteriorating Health

Hassan Bbaale from Itenjero in Shema district a 20-year-old was arrested in March two days after the murder of the Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kawesi and his aides. His relatives said he was taken to Nalufenya Detention Unit in Jinja where he was allegedly tortured. “They charged him with the murder of Kawesi and later Terrorism. He was taken to Nalufenya from where he was tortured.” Said, Fatuma Nantoogo – Relative.

Bbaale’s cousin Fatuma Nantoogo was concerned that since he was transferred from Nalufenya to the Central Police Station in Kampala, he’s been sick but had not received treatment. “He was arrested with a small swelling on the shoulder but because of torture, it is worsening.” Said, Fatuma Nantoogo. She said Bbaale had a swelling on his shoulder at the time he was arrested. Nantoogo said this turned into a wound that had become cancerous. “He was brought in an ambulance for treatment but instead he was kept at CPS now for three months.” Said, Fatuma Nantoogo.

Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson Emilian Kayima told NTV that it was illegal to detain a suspect beyond the mandatory 48 hours. “If it amounts to that then it is regrettable. We should do investigations with full respect for the rights of every individual including suspects.” Said the Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson. “When I insisted he was taken to Mulago. But they demanded 80,000 shillings but the Police failed to pay. I visited him yesterday but found he had been attacked with pressure.” Said, Fatuma Nantoogo. “If it is true that he is still in our cell, I would want to ask the family to come along on Monday and we shall have that resolved.” Said the Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson.

In May, it was discovered that another suspect the Kamwenge Town Council Mayor Geoffrey Byamukama had been tortured and was in a hospital with deep wounds.
