The police have lately come under sharp criticism for firing live rams at unarmed civilians. Last week Police shot and injured 8 students of Old Kampala Secondary School who were protesting against the transfer of their headmistress. The Police Spokesperson Asan Kasingye condemned the shooting at a news conference at their headquarters in Naguru. “We regret the incident and call on our officers to restrain from using live ammunition to disperse unarmed people including students.” Said the Police Spokesperson.
Many cases of Police brutality were recorded across the country during last year’s elections. Last month, a supporter of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi was badly beaten by the Police for reportedly causing trouble. Kasingye said they had begun investigating the case. “We also saw a Police officer stamping on his private part and am directing the DPP and PSU to investigate this matter very well in view of bringing the officer to Justice.” Said the Police Spokesperson. A recent report by the Uganda Human Rights Commission named the Police as the leading human rights violator.
