Patients in Rwenzori often trek miles early in the morning, only to find cleaners and volunteers. Modesto Dodo, the chairman Kilembe sub-county wondered why healthy workers do not live in healthy centers to serve the population.
He went on to say that all government institutions in Kilembe sub-county have staff quarters and that he had been battling with these staff members who are working in the government institutions, to start trying to keep time and stay at their premises but they were not listening.
Locals accused health workers of reporting on duty, only once a week saying that some only came once a week and at times they did not turn up at all.
Patients were quarreling due to the absence of nurses and most of the midwives, as they ended up going back home without getting any assistance. It was even claimed that sometimes the nurses can even refuse to work.
Dr. Yusuf Baseke, the district state officer of Kasese, when contacted expressed shock, about the incident and said “If you have not worked for 21 days, if you have worked for below 21 days, we have a sanction and, reward committee.”
The member of parliament Busongola South, Mbajju Kadika was also surprised to find some health centers closed saying that he had traveled over 20 kilometers on the Mountain, only to find the clinic and staff headquarters closed. He stated that what was required was more effort to remind the workers whether they had decided to sleep on their job.
It was not until midday when Rachael, Baseke a volunteer, reported for work at Kichwamba health center III. She also stated that she had to wait for her colleagues as she could not speak on their behalf.
