GETTING INVOLVED IN OUR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION

At my sons school, parents must be involved in their children's education, which is the way it should be anyway, only that the majority of us are a bunch of lazy, overworked and underpaid parents eking a living in this hard economy and would rather pay heavily for their education and have the teachers do all the donkey work.

Anyways, each term we are invited to check on our children's progress, the child takes you around the school teaching you almost all he has learnt during the school term, this eventually ends in the classroom with the teacher pulling out his books for you to check their progress and also updating you on how they are faring. This whole process takes a minimum of two hours after which come the endless demands of ice cream, cake, trips to the playground, oh gosh, if it were not for the look of joy on my boys’ faces, I would definitely boycott these events, with two boys of school going age multiply these functions by two.

Needless to say, after much grumbling, I am always humbled as I leave the school ground, teachers are really special and do a great job nurturing and teaching our children, I honestly admire their patience and tenacity. how they are able to get these children to grasp all these concepts amazes me and is the reason I continue to work hard at my job in order to pay whatever fees they come up with for the next term because honestly, I cannot do an inch of what teachers do.

At these events, they also take time to lecture us parents and educate us on how we can continue to train the boys at home, and be hands-on, as usual, we promise to do better and also participate in the teaching process. So help me God.
