Stanbic Injects SHS197M Into Makerere Library

Established in 1924, Dr. Albert Cook Library houses all sorts of souvenirs including the founder’s original handwritten patient notes dating back to 1900. In 1965, the medical library was renamed after its founder and like any other structure, the toll of years has had an impact on it without major attention. Speaking at the handover ceremony upon the library’s renovation, Stanbic Bank Chief Executive Director Patrick Mweheire said they were proud to be associated with the promotion of science education and preservation of an iconic heritage. “We really believe that education is the key to the future and we are trying to really intervene not just in universities, you might have seen us in National Schools Championships where we believe a lot of school curriculum is very focused on textbooks and technical materials but in the real world soft skills are much more important. So we are intervening there to see how we can impart some soft skills and complement the curriculum in schools.” Said, Patrick Mweheire – C.E.O Stanbic Bank.

Making his remarks as the Guest of Honor, the Chairman of Council Dr. Wana Etyem, commended Stanbic saying the library last received a touch in 1968. "We are going to look for our own money at the center and then make that money brought to you." "To see how we can give back to the community that shaped us because wherever we have been, they have asked us who trained you to be the professionals you are? By then the extension of the Sir Albert Cook Memorial Library was almost complete but needed about 108 research desks to be functional. We offered to buy these desks." Prof. Charles Ibingira the Principal of Makerere College of Health Sciences reiterated that the library acts as a hub of information for learning, teaching, and research.
