It's now nearly three months since this investigative story aired on NBS TV. A source working with our investigations desk undercover exposed a senior lecturer whom she alleged was sexually harassing her. The immediate impact of the report was felt in the shock waves. The university suspended the lecturer pending investigations. And together with his suspension, a separate committee was set up to investig ate and report back to the university administration. The report was released.
"Culture of impunity that surrounds sexual harassment and abuse including rape at the university allows for the vice to thrive. Persistent incidents of sexual abuse are routinely swept under the rags. In addition, there was a deeply unchecked fraternity culture among male students which produces, reinforces and poisons the campus environment with sexiest vulgarities and profanities." Said, Prof. Sylvia Tamale – Makerere University. An earlier report key shared showed that over 50% of females and about 40% of male students cited sexual harassment as a major source of discontent at Makerere. The latest indicated that abuse of power by lecturers burst up among top causes of sexual harassment at the university. “…climate of impunity in which sexual harassment and abuse take place at this university. Many of the notorious perpetrators are known to their colleagues and students, stories do the rounds in hushed whispers but rarely are perpetrators held to account.”
The Sylvia Tamale led Committee also found that the university's administration was heavily gender segregated to favor males. Of all the university's administrative decision-making positions, only two in ten were held by females. The Committee's report started yet another chapter in the life of the university whose legacy is thronged in the mud with the continuous sexual harassment allegations.
