In a speech brought forward by Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanya, the Minister of Education Janet Museveni said there was a need to over hub the University System and rely heavily on practical lessons than theory. “The importance of hands-on in learning at university – industrial cooperation as one of the most important mechanisms of practical applications of science and technology should be emphasized. Theoretical teaching alone has crippled our continent for far too long. Education should be supported by practical activity to produce knowledge while skilled and self-reliant graduates.” Said, Jacob Oulanya – Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
This was Enlighted as Gulu University awarded 1,484 candidates with degrees in different disciplines. The Education Minister also challenged graduates of what was expected of them. “To the Graduands, you have been equipped with the knowledge and skills that will help you exploit resources at your disposal. Remain focused and be determined to work hard, practice the good morals in pertaining you over the years and remember that learning never ends.”
It is on that occasion that the new Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ladab Wenyuru was installed by the University Chancellor Prof. Fredrick B. Kayanja. Speaking to students, Gulu University Chancellor warned university students on the cultural strikes. “These strikes taking place in our Public University have irritated and inconvenienced the government amongst others. I am warning my friends don’t bring on this situation which will destroy all of us.”
Among the Graduands, 5 scoped PHDs, 21 Master Degrees, and others were Bachelor's Degrees. Over 1,484 students graduated from Gulu University in different courses but they were urged to make their degrees to be felt at different communities as they work to transform Uganda.
